For the Algiers Regional Library, I propose “Random Thoughts,” a tribute, in glass, to the human brain, the celebration of a healthy body and mind.
Within this library is the remarkable collection of neurons and dendrites in the minds of the people coming together for study, discussion and research. The circulation area is like a central nervous system within the day-lit spine of the library—transferring packets of information. I envision the artwork as a parallel glimpse into two central nervous systems, that of the patron and the metaphoric one of the library itself. A sculptural glass neuron emerges from the lobby ceiling and, and as the glass interacts with the ambient daylight and with direct sunlight it infuses the circulation space with a dynamic array of color. As the patron moves through the space, viewing the artwork from diverse vantage points, the sculpture will undergo transformation from comprehensible order to organic complexity as alignments change.
The sculpture will be an impressionistic interpretation of a human neuron, six feet wide, nine feet long and fourteen feet tall. One thousand four hundred sculptural pieces of fused glass will suggest the neuron's nucleus and dendrites. Hundreds of firing dendrites, created in dichroic glass, will pierce the air, as messages are shared.
The library supports and celebrates the intellectual health of the community, the sharing of information and the transfer of knowledge. In parallel, the art celebrates the biology that is the basis of intellectual processes - the action of neurons.
